Holy Shit! People still go to shows in Dallas?!? These were my first thoughts as I arrived at the Yeasayer gig at the Granada. I knew the show had sold out, but I suppose it did not hit me until I saw a line snaking around the building for will call. A packed house seemed appropriate for Yeasayer, a band who seem to have all the ingredients for taking off in a major way. Their first release, All Hour Cymbals, garnered comparisons to other mystic-dancepop darlings Animal Collective and TV on the Radio, while their latest, Odd Blood, is lighter on the critical praise and heavier on the shake-your-ass.
It was hard to know what specifically to expect from this show considering the many stylistic differences from the Yeas’ first to second discs. Would they continue to forsake the more organic, tribal dance sound of All Hour Cymbals? Would this Brooklyn three-piece prove to be Dave Gahan’s progeny?

Yeasayer showed up a little after ten with the group’s three core members situated behind glowing pillars which held their electronic doodads. Added for the tour were two percussionists, one on the conventional kit and the other buried behind an assortment of keyboards and drum machines. Behind the group were four panels which colorfully pulsed along with every song.
The group opened with the “The Children,” a plodding, uninteresting, and mercifully short track. Apparently they must be fond of it, since it also opens up Odd Blood, but it certainly does not kick off a show well. Moving on from that small misstep was no problem for the band. The set was heavy on tracks off the latest release, and by and large they were served up just as you would want them. One commonality between both Yeasayer records has been the thundering percussion, and it remained omnipresent throughout the night. I had been curious all along to see how material from two radically different albums would sit together, and ultimately was surprised at how well it came off.
Yeasayer has a pure penchant for groove, and they pull it off equally well whether it is the frenetic scattershot vocals of “2080,” or the throbbing rise and fall of “Ambling Alp”. Even when 4 out of 5 band members were hunched over their electronics the momentum scarcely slowed, and even weaker tracks (the uptempo but still boring “Mondegreen”) were able to get by without being too much of a drag.
Another forte of Yeasayer’s is harmony. They manage to create an otherworldly sound while avoiding breathy, overwrought frills. I am pleased to report their unique approach loses nothing in their live act. If anything, the interplay between the drums, harmony, and split-duty lead vocals sounded even more at home in a live venue than on the record.
Unfortunately, even at a sold out show the Granada crowd was a bit lackluster. I did not get a strong impression of familiarity with songs, and even the singles did not seem particularly enthusing to the crowd. Everyone seemed dimly aware that “O.N.E.” had shown up on their ipods at some point, but no one seemed to appreciate its infectious combination of jaunty electronic beats and Anand Wilder’s mournful vocal. Though the volume was blaring from start to finish, I suspect if Yeasayer had whipped out a ballad I would have heard the telltale chatter of apathy.
Aside from the crowd, Yeasayer put on a worthy enough show to make them worth catching on this tour. Of course, I suspect they will soon be selling out stadiums once it is announced that they are indeed Depeche Mode reincarnated. I mean seriously, listen to “Ambling Alp” and tell me what YOU hear!
