Preview: Xiu Xiu at the Orange Show (Updated with Venue Change)
Update: The venue for the Xiu Xiu show has been changed due to impending storms. The show will now take place at The Mink/Backroom instead of the Orange Show.
We thoroughly enjoyed the two shows (Dengue Fever and Extra Golden) we've caught at the incomparable Orange Show thus far, so we've been looking forward to their next event ever since it was first announced. The wait is finally (almost) over: San Francisco's Xiu Xiu will grace the monument with their experimental indie stylings on Thursday, August 21. Xiu Xiu were originally scheduled to play the Orange Show back in April, but inclement weather forced the cancellation of the performance. The band was kind enough to agree to swing back through Houston to cash in their rain check, and we couldn't be more appreciative. (Unless, that is, Thao Nguyen with the Get Down Stay Down were coming along to make up their performance as well. What is it they say about gift horses?)

Xiu Xiu…Live at The World Famous Orange Show!
HOUSTON , TX - San Francisco indie band Xiu Xiu brings their singular brand of experimental rock to the intimate amphitheater of The Orange Show monument on Thursday, August 21st. With a sound that reflects the influences of Joy Division, The Cure and other icons of the UK post-punk scene, Xiu Xiu melds ambient noise with classical and folk influences to create modern songs with lush hooks that soar over cacophonous percussion.
Named after the 1998 Chinese film Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl, the band is the brain child of Jamie Stewart formerly of The Indestructable Beat of Palo Alto and Ten In The Swear Jar. Led by Stewart, with a collaborative line-up that seems to change with each album, Xiu Xiu’s sound is constantly shifting with but always moving forward. Mirroring the moods and lives of its members, Xiu Xiu’s song catalog ranges from haunting, minimalist tunes to intense, full throttle covers of Nina Simone, Bauhaus and even The Pussycat Dolls.
Xiu Xiu has been winning over West Coast fans since 2000. Their recently released sixth album Women As Lovers may be their strangest and most personal work yet but is also being hailed by critics as their most accessible. Houston music lovers can find out for themselves why Xiu Xiu inspires cult-like devotion from fans when the band plays the Orange Show.
Opening for Xiu Xiu are Carla Bozulich’s Evangelista and Common Eider, King Eider.
