Another year has come and gone for the Wakarusa Camping and Music Festival, and this year was sure to bring several changes. One of the main changes that was immediately noticeable was the volume of attendees this year. I heard rumors of anywhere from 15,000 to 60,000 people were there. If I had to guess based off experience, I would say there were around 20,000. Regardless, it proved to be yet another year that was run flawlessly thanks to staff and festival-goers alike. Read on for Thursday's line-up after the jump.
Thursday started off pretty normal. After driving into an impressive lightning storm in southern Missouri, I soon passed out, only to wake up in Fayetteville, AR, an hour or so away from Mulberry Mountain. Upon arrival, the party seemed to be starting as we made our way to the box office to get absolutely nothing accomplished. Oh well. We met several cool people waiting, until a young gentleman who seemed to already be peaking went into a seizure next to us. We quickly moved on, after the on-site medical staff arrived to assist him.
Our next step was a quick jaunt into the camping grounds to secure a spot. The sun had finally peeked its fiery head out, and would pretty much represent the whole weekend, making it HOT and HUMID AS FUCK. Hydration would prove key, and the free water spots along with the Mulberry River would serve as cool down spots for Wakarusians. We established our camp in a cozy little locale, and began to meet and greet with the neighbors - who would provide us with much entertainment for the weekend. And then off to the music we went.
:: The Hypsys ::

After setting up camp Cafe con Leche and I sauntered off to investigate the musical land of Wakarusa. We made it to the far off but well-shaded and well worth it Backwoods stage to catch the last half of The Hypsys. I was immediately drawn to the trio from Tuscaloosa, AL. They, like several other bands, were the winners of a Waka Winter Classic in Alabama, and won a slot at Waka.
The Hypsys self-classify themselves as "progressive-jazz-rock-fusion-soul-funk." After checking them out I would agree, but I'd throw bluegrass into the mix. All three just graduated from the University of Alabama, and are ready to focus on a career in music. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of these guys.

:: Mother Hips ::

After a quick nap that was interrupted by the searing heat, we made our way over to the Revival Tent to catch a little bit of The Mother Hips in action. Catching only the last two songs, The Hips seemed to be an excellent psychedelic rock show. It was a great way to kick off the weekend, even though they decided to end their show about twenty minutes early. Perhaps the Bay Area artists couldn't handle the heat very well. I would love the opportunity to get to see these guys, as it's hard for me to say that I actually caught them. Regardless, the short amount if time I spent with them was delightful.

Next on the list would be Split Lip Rayfield, marking our first trip to the Main Stage. Hailing from the former proving grounds of Wakarusa - Lawrence, KS - SLR has become a BOT favorite. Walking up towards the front, I noticed that the wooden stage that was used last year had been pushed to the background. A stage had been erected in front of it, and would serve us up great sound and crazy lights the entire weekend. SLR was already into their set, and I we walked up just in time to catch "100 Dollar Bill". The crisp thrashgrass showed the true beauty of the new sound system, projecting deep into the fields. Sticking around for several songs, I made my way out after a quick version of the classic "Crazy."

Hash Browns and I found out way to the Outpost Tent while still exploring the Waka camp grounds, and what did we find a few steps away from the Mother Hips? A total dance party! The instrumental electronica of Somasphere was rocking that tent. The place was filled with great vibes. Dancing, jumping, sweating, and of course, hula-hooping. Just the energy that we needed to survive for the rest of that hot afternoon.

Earlier this year Band of Heathens got on my radar via the Americana Awards. They were nominated for "Best Duo or Group," going up against the likes of The Avett Brothers, Carolina Chocolate Drops, and Dave Rawlings Machine.
Band of Heathens came together in Austin, with a bonus that most of the members were individual artists. So they have more than the average song-writing ability/diversity within the group. They are also a bit unusual in that there are three main vocalists. Colin Brooks, Ed Jurdi, and Gordy Quist each have very different vocal stylings, but they still seem to mesh well.
I've stayed with this band, since MySpace-ing them, because they bring something I find missing in lots of Americana and Bluegrass: soul. Not just a band that rides on it's pretty riffs, they throw in some good soul with rock and can just as easily tell a good story. I enjoyed them much more live than their studio albums. Which raises a question I keep asking myself, why don't bands just release live recordings? --Band of Heathens first two albums are live recordings. Gotta give them props. Be sure and check out "Live from Momo's" and "Live at Antone's."
Their set at Wakarusa was in the middle of the day, and damnation - it was hot. They played lots of my favorites from their latest album, In the Ether, including "L.A. County Blues" and "Shine a Light." "Golden Calf" is a slow burner that was a perfect match for the melting Revival Tent. I can't recall when it was played - but "Cornbread," from their self-titled album (their third album and first studio release) was a crowd-pleaser. You could infer several meanings from that song, but I have my favorite. Cornbread is a delicious southern tradition, and I suggest you check out Band of Heathens if you like bluegrass with funky soul thrown in.
:: The Heavy Pets ::

Back at the Outpost, The Heavy Pets kept up the fast pace of the tent with great beats, keeping Wakarusians dancing. For the last few songs they had guest musician Chuck Morris, Lotus percussionist, accompany them.
And this is when I came to a personal realization (that was later confirmed at the Disco Biscuits show). I found I really enjoy this type of music. This crazy, danceable, funk-punk-rock-jam fusion of music. I really enjoy it. So there, I confessed. Now go and look up some of the bands we're talking about here, you might be surprised with new flavors that hit the spot.
:: Hoots and Hell Mouth ::

Being urged to check out the Backwoods Stage by several Mulberry newbies, I did so without any resistance. Philadelphia folk band Hoots and Hell Mouth was on stage. I have heard of these guys, not because of their music, but because of the interesting name and their extensive touring. I always see them popping up locally or at festivals, so I figured with a little time to kill, there was no better time to see them. Their upbeat folk/bluegrass mix meshed with the rustic atmosphere of the Backwoods Stage extremely well. The moments spent with them left me wanting more. But duty calls, so I made my way back to the Main Stage for a little funk!

Dumpstaphunk was next up on the Main Stage, with Ivan Neville leading the pack. The funky set was sure to test out the bass on the stage, and did just that as I could feel my innards shaking in the photo pit. I've had the opportunity to catch these guys in the festival setting several times, to my delight. The New Orleans natives never cease to impress me, with dueling bass, lots of keys, and the energetic and amazing guitar riffs from Ivan Neville's cousin, Ian Neville. I spent about five songs with them before retiring back to the Revival for a dose of some Americana.
:: Great American Taxi ::

An interesting riff in the schedule was the fact that there was not a set break between Great American Taxi and Todd Snider. It sounded all too familiar, but I just couldn't place my finger on it. That was until I was swiftly reminded by Hash Browns of her and our good buddy Bacon's review of Snider with GAT at Gruene Hall. GAT came out and played a quick set, rolling through several classics including "Appalachian Soul" off of their debut album. The set was quite energetic, as GAT was joined on stage by Railroad Earth's fiddle player, Tim Carbone. He would remain for the rest of the set and with Snider, which I don't think was a disappointment to anyone inside the tent. One thing I noticed about the set was that Vince Hermann wasn't his normal wild man self. He seemed a little angry about something, but whatever was going on, the set was still excellent.

Todd Snider was greeted by GAT as well as the roaring cheers of the audience. I have caught Snider solo, but the presence of a backing band was surely appreciated. I was planning on getting a little rest with a seat and a smoke during the show, but with the tent rocking, that wasn't allowed. I still survived, and made my way up front for some shots. A few songs in, they ripped into the "Ballad of The Kingsman" off East Nashville Skyline. Snider continued playing his classics, with songs such as "Doublewide Blues", "Lookin For A Job", "Easy Money" and "Conservative Christian, Right-Wing Republican, Straight, White, American Males". This set, although early in the weekend, was one of my favorite sets of the festival. Although a nice, mellowed-out Snider set in the middle of the weekend would have been nice, the uptempo rockin set that we were blessed by was nothing short of amazing.
:: Groovement ::

Remember I told you about Groovement playing at Wakarusa? They did! And they gave away a few hundred copies of their live Under The Covers Volume 1 CD. And although Hash Browns and I didn't get a CD, we did get to see them at the Backwoods Stage during out first Waka evening. Their set started with their introductory "Groovement Movement," and it just got better and more comfortable from there. I was glad to see so many people enjoying the music; for a moment while trekking to the Backwoods with Hash Browns, I thought we wouldn't make it. That was a long walk, but it was worth the sweat!
I found out a few days before Waka, that Groovement got their chance to play at Wakarusa by winning the Waka Winter Classic in Fayetteville, AR. Way to represent the 'Ville!
:: 7 Walkers ::

I then spent a brief amount of time heading back to camp for some dinner, relaxing and several beers seemed like a great idea to me. We had a long night ahead of us, and I figured I could swoop through the Main Stage area to catch a little bit of 7 Walkers, as I did. The heat was already taking it's toll, and I spent about two hours back at camp, rejuvenating, while jamming to the Disco Biscuits.

My third electronica-jam fusion sound band of the day, Disco Biscuits put a great end to my first day at Wakarusa. The show was awesome. The music, along an awesome light show and glow stick wars that started in the first couple of songs... It was great, ya'll! Look here. I really don't know why I'd been avoiding this type of sound, but it got to me and I have Wakarusa to thank for that!

:: The Machine ::

I ventured over to the Revival Tent to check out the packed ass house during The Machine. With them on one side, and Lotus next door in the Outpost Tent, I made several trips back and forth throughout the night. One thing I noticed was how packed the tents got at night, with the lack of music on the Main Stage. There just wasn't enough room, as would prove evident on throughout the festival. Unfortunately, I don't really enjoy sitting 100 feet outside a tent to take in a show, but what do you do. The Machine tore it up, playing classics such as "Time", "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" and "Money". What I really liked about their set was the more obscure tracks that they took on, such as "Set the Controls For the Heart Of the Sun".
Thursday was one of my favorite musical lineups for the weekend, and it didn't sell us short. Amongst the heat, people were ready to get down to start the weekend, and that we did. I called it a night and did the stumble walk back to the tent. Over on shakedown, I was greeted by the sounds of nitrous tanks and balloons popping. Kids these days... But with one day in the book, I was very excited about the weekend that lay ahead. I was a little sad about having to wake up at 8am drenched in sweat, but what do you do?

Actually, both of their FIRST TWO albums 2006-07 are, indeed, "live" recordings. "Live from Momo's" was voted #2 Best album at 2007 SXSW in Austin when they were voted Best New Band there. That was then followed by ANOTHER live album -- "Live at Antone's" -- which includes a DVD also (recorded by METV cable TV station in Austin from 2006-07).
It was their THIRD self-titled album that you refer to as their "debut" album that was actually their first STUDIO album after two "live" albums. It was produced by Ray Wylie Hubbard in 2008 and features vocals from Patty Griffin and Ray on a few songs. That album went to #1 on the Americana charts both here and in Europe.
Their FOURTH album, "One Foot in the Ether" in 2009 was also STUDIO produced and it also went to #1 on both American and European Americana charts last year. It was highlighted with their performance on world-famous "Austin City Limits" show on PBS-TV last November 2009 (which still can be streamed with a video.pbs.org search).
You are correct, though... the Band of Heathens are GREAT live.

I actually wrote that part of the review, TML. I do have both of their live albums, and they are great editions to the Band of Heathens collection. Tried to keep our massive Waka post short - so I left them out, but that is a disservice to BoH. In talking about bands releasing live recordings, that was a blanket statement that I would prefer for most artists. Thanks for mentioning this awesome info, and correcting me about what their true debut album is. I will correct the post.
