Toubab Krewe, John Brown's Body @ Bourbon Theatre

With spring quickly approaching, I have gone from stagnant to busy in the matter of a few days when it comes to music. One of the main reasons for this quick transition is the wonderful folks at the Bourbon Theatre and Rad Kadillac. The upcoming lineup at the theatre has me frequenting it multiple nights a week. Which I'm sure will begin to strain on my pocket in bar tabs alone. Oh well, you only live once. This last Wednesday was no different, with a co headlining tour featuring John Brown's Body and BOT favorites, the Toubab Krewe. JBB was new to me, but would prove as an excellent addition to the tour. TK, as always, would blow the minds of everyone present.

The one thing I love about co headlining tour is that you are treated to two amazing bands, in one venue. Unfortunately, due to a prior engagement, I was unable to make it to Bourbon by the 9pm show time. I was really bummed when I figured this out, acknowledging that I could miss a good chunk of Toubab's set. I finally strolled in, causally late at about a quarter to 10pm. To my chagrin, TK wasn't first on the bill, so my worries were settled. Filing in to get a beer, I made my way to the front of the venue to catch the last several songs from JBB. Not knowing what to expect from the eight man band, I was instantly impressed by there smooth horn section and upbeat dub sound. The crowd was already in full force, leaving me to question whether or not I should have skipped my sand volleyball game, and spent my time jamming instead. In my short time with them, JBB was able to keep me my sober body moving, leaving me with a taste for more in my salivating mouth. Reggae has always been enjoyable to me, and seemed like nothing more than a fitting alternative to Toubab, who would be soon taking the stage. Hopefully I'll have another opportunity to catch these guys in the future.
Toubab Krewe was founded in 2005 in the musical mecca of Ashville, NC. The band has years of studying under local artists in Mali, Africa, and these influences run rampant throughout their set. Specializing in instruments such as the kora, kamelengoni and African percussion to name a few, the blend of music Toubab brings is a one of a kind showing which should not be missed. Lincoln seems to be a frequent stop for these guys, and I have now been able to catch them in my hometown three times. In my opinion, the more the merrier! However, this was their first appearance at Bourbon Theatre and would hopefully prove to be a better spot for them then the prior venues they have played.
After a quick set break and a refill on my chocolate stout (Which did end up all over my camera later, thank you Rogue!), I made my way to the front of the stage in anticipation. What was about to commence in front of me was an all out jam session, sending the good sized Wednesday night crowd into a frenzy. By the sound of things, there were a lot of ears in the audience that were virgin to the Toubab Krewe. That changed quickly, as I think it took all of about two minutes for everyone to give into their temptations and begin to break it down for the evening. Although most of the crowd was focused on Justin Perkins and his Malian instrumentation, the remainder of the quintet were each just as amazing as the next. Also included in the evenings events was an intense drum solo by percussion specialist Luke Quaranta. Due to my drunken state, as well as my insatiable need to boogie throughout the Bourbon, the show seemed to last about 20 minutes. The short, yet sweet set was nothing but bliss to my ears, making for anther wonderful showing for TK.
After a great evening of music, the end came too quickly as sobriety came quickly once we hit the cold air on "O" street. John Brown's Body provided an excellent set of modern reggae, while Toubab Krewe wowed the masses with their unique blend of African and American fusion. The musical differences in the two bands proved to be an excellent mixture, catering to several crowds and leaving everyone with a smile on their face. Now hopefully this trend of great music in Lincoln will continue!
