The Uptown Theater in Kansas City, MO was the venue for the April 29, 2008 showing of The Raconteurs with openers Birds of Avalon. I was not sure what to expect crowd wise for a Tuesday show, but was quickly greeted with a packed house in the beautiful venue. The Birds of Avalon were already well into their set as we were fashionably late.

Barely being able to make it through the doorway, we slowly eased our way up to gather a better view of Birds of Avalon, and of course, to secure a decent spot for the headliners. As we entered, the song was quite jam influenced. I was quickly captivated and felt as if we might have a decent opener. The crowd was quite sedentary and seemed to be still mulling over their thoughts on the act. That song soon ended, and we were led down a path of random noise.
Although Birds at times were able to muster up ounces of glory, for the most part, their music proved to be quite monotone and very busy. It was hard to make out much of the lyrics. At the time I had become quite worried that it was the venue's fault, thus making me curious as to how The Raconteurs would sound. This continued for several songs, one of which included wind-up birds being dispersed throughout the audience, which in my eyes was unfortunately the highlight of this act. They weren't horrible, but still nothing to write home about. The act soon ended and the entire theater began the mad dash to the front to catch a better glimpse of what lay ahead. The only problem was I think that approximately two people left their posts, making for a crowded night.
The 30 minute set break seemed to last an eternity, as the crew began setting up for The Raconteurs. I have been very excited to see these guys live, as I had heard nothing but good things. They soon came out and got right down to business. After an extended applause from the crowd, they began with the title track off of their recent release, Consolers of the Lonely. Much of the night would be spent visiting tracks from this release. Throughout the evening we were also blessed with many tracks from their debut album, Broken Boy Soldiers. Consolers just seems to be a little more upbeat in the long run, which is neither a good or bad thing. It actually makes for a nice mixture of music when they pull it off live.

It has been awhile since I have been to a show that was just pivotal to my music needs, but this one was. To be honest, The Raconteurs fall into my top ten shows of all time. After being witness to the unpleasant noise for the opener, it was nothing short of a dream to hear how good these guys sounded live. Minus the crowd noise and the improvisation, you would think you were listening to their studio work. The Raconteurs provide me with an old school rock and roll sound which I feel is missing in music today. The entire band seemed quite talented and it was as if they just clicked. Each member provided their own unique touch several times throughout the night, but of course it was Jack White who stole the show. His impeccable guitar playing seemed to be constantly blowing minds in the crowd. At one point during the song "Blue Veins", I literally expected White's axe to spontaneously combust from the intense shredding that was being laid out for us. I soon found myself looking for fire exits.
All in all, I was thoroughly impressed with The Raconteurs. They are definitely one of the bands I look forward to seeing more and more of as they continue to grow. I would recommend them to anyone, but if you don't have your tickets already, I'd say good luck finding them.

For a standard performance that left my ears bleeding, I give Birds of Avalon 4.75/10 slices.
For an amazing performace that left me with a perma-grin and in desperate need of a change of pants, I give The Raconteurs 9.5/10 slices. FYI- I think this is the highest rating I've given out to date. It's a nice...
P.S. - Sorry for the horrible pics. The crowded venue and absence of my SLR due to venue restrictions made it difficult, but I'll work with what we've got.
