Mike Gordon Band - "God Put A Smile On Your Face"

Taking time off of touring with his somewhat lesser known group, bassist Mike Gordon has been hitting up a handful of spots on the east coast for a short tour. The second show on the tour, at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, MA, found Gordon and his band working through several of his quirky originals, but also an interesting choice of a cover songs. I usually don't associate Phish and Coldplay together, but after hearing Gordon's take on Chris Martin's "God Put A Smile On Your Face," I was pleasantly surprised. Check out the vid to gather your own opinion.

Not bad, huh? Gordon also pulled out a Leonard Cohen cover, as well as a show-closing version of The Beatles' "She Said, She Said." I wish there were clips of those floating around. If you find one, feel free to send it my way!

Big ups to Scotty B over at Hidden Track for originally posting this clip.

Grammy Awards 2009 Winners, Video

The 51st annual Grammy Awards took place last night, featuring a plethora of quality performances and collaborations. During the course of the evening, viewers witnessed Dave Grohl playing with Paul McCartney, Coldplay with Jay-Z, Radiohead with the USC marching band, the "Rap Pack" featuring Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, TI, and an extremely rotund preggers M.I.A., B.B. King with Buddy Guy, John Mayer and Keith Urban, Lil Wayne with Allen Toussaint, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Terence Blanchard and Robin Thicke, and Al Green performing a surprisingly good duet with Justin Timberlake on his classic "Let's Stay Together" backed by Boyz II Men and Keith Urban. Also taking the stage during the three-and-a-half hour televised event were Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Stevie Wonder, Adele, Smokey Robinson, Estelle and MusicCares Person of the Year Neil Diamond.

To pass the time between performances they also decided to hand out a few of those coveted golden record players. The big winners of the night were Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, who took home Album of the Year for Raising Sand, Record of the Year for "Please Read The Letter," and a few other various awards. Other notable winners included Lil Wayne for Best Rap Album, Coldplay for Best Rock Album and Song of the Year, and Radiohead for Best Alternative Music Album.

2008 Grammy Nominees: Radiohead, Plant & Krauss, Lil Wayne, Coldplay

After fifty long years of award giving, the big wigs over at the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences have finally gotten it right. The official list of nominees for the 51st annual Grammy Awards has been announced, and to the delight of many true music fans, includes several non-top-40 artists. While some of your favorite teeny-boppers are still on the list, they are much less noticeable than in prior years. Leading the pack this year with nominations for Album of the Year are New Orleans syrup-sipper Lil Wayne, Mr. Paltrow's band Coldplay, ex-Zeppelin Robert Plant and his project with Alison Krauss, Ne-Yo (?), and perhaps the most deserving of the bunch, Radiohead. All five Album of the Year award nominees are also up for several other categories in their respective genres.

Coldplay - Viva La Vida

Chris Martin and the boys of Coldplay are back with a new album, Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends. Besides making their title extra-long they also have some exciting new things going on. You might ask yourself, what new things are Eggs talking about? The first new addition is help from a relatively unknown producer (Brian Eno) that hasn't really worked with any large acts (U2, Talking Heads, David Bowie). Second, they are sporting get-ups that look to be inspired by the revolutionary war. Come to think of it, those are about the only changes, everything else is pretty much the same. The two new songs that we've all heard by now are quite good, so I am sure that the rest of this Eno-fied album will be well worth the ten dollar iTunes charge.

Coldplay performed "Viva La Vida" for the first time live at the MTV Movie Awards last night which was hosted by Canadian funny-man Mike Myers. The 2-hour show also featured the long-awaited return (at least by me) of Wayne's World with Myers (Wayne) and Dana Carvey (Garth) after a fourteen-year hiatus. Another highlight was a musical performance by Adam Sandler who, after being nick-named The Sandman by Tom Cruise, showed off his guitar chops while singing about being better than everyone else. Check out Coldplay's performance here:

This makes me even more excited for the June 17 release of Viva La Vida or Death And All Of Its Friends. I hope it lives up to everybody's expectations.

On a completely different note, a question came up while watching television tonight: Are Jack White and Johnny Depp the same person?
