Buxton & Wild Moccasins @ Mango's

It's good to be back in Houston. I spent a long time away from the Bayou City, and what better way to get back into the swing of things than a Buxton show. Not just any Buxton show, but their highly lauded 7" release party that also featured the Wild Moccasins first hometown performance since returning from a freshman tour of the states just a few days ago. It was my first time attending a performance at the newly renovated and reopened Mango's, a vegetarian cafe by day, and ripping local venue by night. They've done the best they can with the tiny room, but when it gets packed like it did for this Saturday night performance, it becomes an oven – even Sergio Trevino, lead vocalist and guitarist for Buxton, proclaimed after the show that it was the hottest performance he'd ever been a part of. Come to think of it, it also might have been one of the hottest performances I've ever been a part of – in more ways than one.

The Wild Moccasins - "Cakes"

Houston's indie scene has finally started to make a name for itself as of late, offering several young bands to the fold that are making quite a bit of noise in different music communities. Some of our favorites include Buxton, The Hungry Villagers, The Tontons, Young Mammals, Sideshow Tramps and the fun-loving group of pop sprites we know as The Wild Moccasins. Recently, our friends over at 29-95 sat in on a session with the Moccasins that took place in indie scenester Joe Mathlete's living room. After a brief tease of the B-52's "Rock Lobster," The Wild Moccasins jump in to a delicious version of their own "Cakes."

After a couple well-populated showcases at SXSW, and planting some major seeds here in town, The Wild Moccasins are fitting to blow up soon. Their clean-as-a-whistle sound and image serves as a stark contrast to the darker, brooding facade that is emanating out of today's indie scene. Watch out for these kids...

This year's Spring edition of the Westheimer Block Party, organized by Free Press Houston, is set to take place on Saturday, April 12, 2008. Eggs and I eagerly anticipate the bi-annual event every April and October, and this Spring's lineup looks to be one of the strongest yet. Music begins at noon and goes late.
