My Morning Jacket @ Stubb's

My Morning Jacket's August 24th performance at Stubb's was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated shows of the summer for Eggs and myself. It's no secret that we're huge fans of MMJ; every time we see them live our appreciation deepens. Sunday in Austin, our expectations were met and the bar was raised a little more: armed with pirouettes, a cape, and a pancho-clad bear, the band delivered a consistently high-energy set that left the crowd happily dripping sweat in the Texas heat. They seem to leave it all on the stage every time they play, a quality that has deservedly boosted them to the top of our shortlist of the best live acts in existence.

Wilco and Retribution Gospel Choir @ Stubb's

When I found out Wilco was coming to Stubb's, the famed outdoor venue in downtown Austin, I was egg-static (sorry)! We decided that it would be best to only go the first night of their two-night, Sunday/Monday residency since we have lives outside of BOT that involve early morning jobs. We made it to Austin, just in time to jump in the ever-growing line of people waiting to get as close as they could to Jeff Tweedy and the rest of the boys in Wilco. The weather was perfect as everybody settled into their spots for the evening. The waiting game began as we were still about an hour away from Retribution Gospel Choir's opening set.

Caribou/Fuck Buttons @ Emo's

I both love and hate the fact that I live so close to Austin. Every time I am there I decide that I will soon be moving there (which obviously never happens). It is home to SxSW and ACL, and has also been branded "The Live Music Capitol of the World". The city is a music blogger's best and/or worst friend. Unfortunately, I have a bad habit of going to as many live shows as possible. The bad part of that habit is that I do not like to miss any shows. If I lived there, I'd be broke.

Really though, if we moved to Austin, who would be here to report on all of the great Houston happenings? Plus, a road trip to see two incredible bands like Caribou and Fuck Buttons always ends up being a good time.

ACL Fest Artist Announcement Coming Soon...

According to Austin City Limits Music Festival's official website, the line-up will be released in the early part of April (Austin 360 says the official date is Tuesday, April 15th). This year will mark the 7th edition of the festival, taking place September 26-28 at Austin's Zilker Park. As always, anticipation of who will be gracing this years line-up is starting to build. Several different blogs and forums are starting to get busy with chatter about which bands are confirmed to play, rumored, or just pain wished for. If half of the rumors come true, I will be a happy man.

Here is a list of rumored artists to tide you over until the actual line-up is released:

2008 SxSW Music - Full Artist List

Today the SxSW Music Conference announced their full list of showcasing artists. There are hundreds and hundreds of acts that are going to be making their way to Austin next month for the world renowned multi-media conference. I included the full list after the break for any of you music nerds who need to read every band (like me). For those of you who just want to see some highlights, check out the tags for this post. Also, for all of you Houston readers, I went ahead and bolded all of the bands that are coming from the Bayou City (congrats guys!).

My New Years Resolution!

Keeping a New Years resolution is pretty much impossible for me. I am sure many people are in the same boat. I have quit smoking three times. I have gone on four unsuccessful diets. It just does not work for me. This year I have decided to make one that would stick. My New Years resolution is to see as many great live acts as I can in 2008. I have not had any trouble going to great live shows in the past so I thought that this would be the perfect resolution for me (I am quitting smoking for a fourth time on the 7th of January. The reason for quitting on the 7th is to make sure it's not actually a resolution).

The beginning of this year is shaping up to be a pretty exciting one musically. Bands are starting to book their spring dates, and Houston, Austin and beyond are starting to fill in their calendars. Here's a list of shows that we here at Breakfast On Tour are really starting to get amped about.

Gil Mantera’s Party Dream: Unplugged…Again…and Again…and Again…

Walking into Beauty Bar makes you wish you’d donned your black leggings (guys), pretentiously coiffed hair, and the gaze that screams, "I just threw up in the bathroom." Well, that might be a tad extreme, but it appears Gil Mantera’s Party Dream and Camel Cigarettes bring out the hipster’s hipster. While the hipster ‘tude and body odor are usually a deal breaker for any venue for Coffee and Doughnut, the hype surrounding the Party was enough for us to make headway to the front of the stage at Beauty Bar on Saturday, December 15.
