ROTHBURY 2009: Thursday in Review

With all the great concert and festivals I'm lucky enough to attend year in and year out, not many of them could even come close to comparing to last year's inaugural ROTHBURY Festival. With that being said, year two stepped it up even more from year one, bringing in a solid line-up of players to entertain the 35,000 gathered in western Michigan. With near-perfect weather, ROTHBURY 2009 returned with a vengeance, making sure not to fall into a sophomore slump early with bands like Keller Williams, The Disco Biscuits, Cold War Kids, Toubab Krewe and Future Rock starting things off on Thursday, June 2nd.

I left Ohio at about 8:30 am, with a full tank of gas, and a heightening determination to make it to ROTHBURY. After a nice long stop at Wal-Mart to secure groceries for the weekend, I finally pulled into Rothbury, MI at about 3:30. I headed to the Oceana High School to secure my photo and media credentials, then drove toward the main ROTHBURY gate just down the road. With a surprisingly short line, I pulled into the grounds after a brief security check. Taking a quick right over a downed divider line (i've never been one to follow the rules), I drove into the Perch campground, just past ADA camping, decently close to the main entrance. It was close enough to the action, but far enough where I could easily sleep without too much distraction. I quickly set up camp, taking time to converse with my new neighbors and had about an hour to relax before the first show of the night. Easily securing my weekends party favors, I shipped off into the main gates for the first time of the weekend.

Instantly recognizing differences in the layout, the front area was compacted with more booths and vendors than the previous year, making it one of the many busy epicenters inside the main grounds. They also took our advice and moved the farmers market to this area, making it more accessible to those not sporting a map. They did take a few things away from the front, most noticeably the Establishment, and the swinging monkeys. The loss of the monkeys was somewhat disappointing, but it didn't take much away from the entire feel of the festival. Moving on down the path, I entered the Tripolee area, where they were still setting up the many lights scattered around the area. The geodesic domes that defined Tripolee last year, were now replaced with an artistic covering, making the area more accessible to more people at once, especially for some of the bigger late night acts that held up that stage throughout the weekend.

Knowing that I was a bit late for my first act, I rushed towards the Ranch Arena, getting there just in time for the opening notes of Asheville, NC-based, Malian-influenced Toubab Krewe's early evening set. Toubab has been one of BOT's favorites for years now, catching them on several occasions both here in Houston, and at festivals around the country. Their sound has expanded from the tribal, African-based instrumentals to add more of a rock feel. It's an intruiguing mix that's heavy on percussion, as well as the 21-string kora playing of Justin Perkins. The first of many to shout out to Michael Jackson, Toubab Krewe worked through an interesting rendition of "Billie Jean" that incited a huge crowd reaction upon the songs first notes. While this served as their only true set of the weekend, they also hosted a drum workshop on Friday, and were featured as a guest with The Dead on Saturday night. About half-way through Toubab Krewe's set, I headed through The Sherwood Forest for the first time of the weekend. It was still daytime, so it didn't have the full effect yet, but just being back in there again was good enough. I was home again. I was in somewhat of a hurry, and I knew that I'd be spending quite a bit of time in there that weekend, so I shipped off in favor of photographing Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam. We've seen the former incarnation of BDS a few times, and always left satisfied with the young blues men, but with a new bassist, and Knowles taking center stage, I was interested in seeing what was different. Starting a bit earlier than scheduled, Knowles treated the audience to a heaping round of blues-driven rock, highlighted by his skillfully picked guitar solos. Not much had changed with the new bassist, but that's a good thing. They're a solid trio that are carrying on the music that masters like Muddy Waters and B.B. King helped to popularize, and are not having any trouble in the process.

Davy Knowles

Another trip through the Sherwood Forest led me back to the Ranch Arena for my most anticipated set of the day. Keller Williams, who performed last year with the WMD's, decided to bring his classic solo project to Michigan for this years event. Keller walked on stage to start his set already strumming his acoustic guitar with speed and precision. A few sound problems found the instrumental to last a bit longer than usual, but soon Keller was into his first song, quickly tributing MJ with his version of the ever-popular "Rock With You." Paying homage to another noteworthy group of musicians making headlines in 2009, Keller was soon playing an incredibly funky version of Phish's "Birds of a Feather" that had those like myself, on break from tour, back into the swing of things. Later in the set, Keller invited String Cheese Incident bassist Keith Moseley, who also is a member of the WMD's, for a version of his festival-friendly "Portapotty," a song about falling in love in the line for the bathroom at a show. A song later, two more members of SCI joined the fold when Jason Hann jumped on trap set and Kyle Hollingsworth sat down at a keyboard. Keller and half-an-Incident made their way through Williams' fan favorite "Kidney In A Cooler" closely followed by "Breathe" from SCI and Williams' collaborative album of the same name. With all members still on stage, Keller finished the set off with "Fuel For The Road," which featured a very Cheese-like funk jam throughout. It was a nice way to set the weekend off right, and to get the early attendees excited for the ensuing SCI headlining set on Friday night. It was also one of my two favorite shows of the entire day.

Keller Williams ft. Mosely, Hollingsworth & Hann

I've become pretty good friends with Felix Moreno over the past few years, but for some reason I had yet to ever see his band, Future Rock, live. Their set at Wakarusa last year was rained out, and their only stop ever in Houston found me out of town, so I was very excited for my first chance to check them out. I had a good conversation with Moreno earlier in the day, and had the chance to meet the rest of the band as well. When I walked up, the security was not going to allow me access to the photo pit, but with some persistence, I finally made it in. Their set was already pounding away with electronic beats layered over really heavy bass. It was almost unbearable to be in the photo pit, as I thought my ears were going to explode, so after trying to snap a few shots, I headed towards the back of Tripolee to catch some more of the set from an enjoyable distance. Filling the show full of fist-pumps, Future Rock were very energetic in their live performance, and got the kids prepped and ready for a night that weighed heavily on "jamtronica." I danced along for about a half-an-hour, before heading back to the Ranch Arena for another round of music.

Future Rock

I have a really good friend that swears by the band Lotus, and will travel anywhere within a 200 mile radius to catch them live. While Michigan was a bit out of his range, and I wasn't able to get him to join me, I still headed his word and caught their live performance. I've seen bits and pieces of their sets at Wakarusa over the past few years, but never gave them a complete chance. I finally did, and am quite happy with the results. At times having more of a rock feel to their music than their electronic-based counterparts, they really know when to turn up the heat and use the crowds energy to their advantage. They had no trouble finding their way around their instruments of choice, but were fueled by the incessant keyboard, synth and bass work of brothers Jesse and Luke Miller. This young band impressed me more than most electronic acts usually do, and are doing a good job in helping in the necessary rebirth of today's jam scene.

Lotus

After meeting up with my weekend counterpart (let's call her Karesa) during Lotus, we hung around the Ranch Arena to catch a bit of The Disco Biscuits before taking a trip into the Sherwood Forest for our first nighttime romp through the woods. Just like last year, the lighting was top notch, and the added decorations in the forest gave a new, but welcoming feel. The ornamental woodwork that adorned the Sherwood Court stage last year, now made its way to the center of the forest, serving as somewhat of a shrine throughout the weekend. The Reincarnation garden switched sides from last year, and now ran the entire length of the path on the east side of the forest. The Speak EZ stage took over the area that was the secret stage last year, this year featuring a bar as well as chairs and tables to give it more of a cabaret feel – like the Establishment last year. Suspended from the trees were a host of oddly sized and shaped inflatables, including colored hearts and what I could only describe as candy cane-striped chili peppers. My tweet from the weekend describes this years Sherwood Forest quite well – "Definitely not the same, still fucking amazing!"

While there were plenty of jam and electronica acts doing there thing on Thursday, it was the sounds of indie rock that pulled me in late night. Getting a prime slot, closing out the Sherwood Court, the Cold War Kids played their hearts out for those few of us who were in attendance for their performance. I had missed their set at Voodoo last fall, so this was one of my most anticipated shows all weekend. They didn't bring any spectacular lights, or try to deviate from their usual sound, but what they did bring was special. They have great rhythms that mesh extremely well with the unique stand-out vocals of Nathan Willett. I wasn't sure how much I'd like them live due to some differing reviews, but they turned out to be my other favorite show of the day, and probably in my top five or six shows all weekend. "Hang Me Up To Dry" had Karesa and myself rocking out unbelievably hard in the field before taking up space on the side of the stage for the rest of the set. It was unfortunate that not too many people were in attendance, because they brought the heat to ROTHBURY.

Cold War Kids

With their set ending close to 2:30, we headed back to the Forest to relax before making it back to camp. The Sherwood is the best place to be at 3:00 am or later, because the crowds all dissipate by then, and it gets back to the calm, quiet psychedelia that we all know and love. The lights are spellbinding, and can put you in a trance if you're not careful. After a few more moments enjoying the trees, we made our way out of the venue to rest up for the extremely long Friday we had waiting for us.
