ROTHBURY 2009: Saturday in Review

We were half way through the weekend, and ROTHBURY was still alive and kicking. Saturday's main event featured a headlining set from The Dead which was being billed as their only performance for the entire summer. Many other notable acts also took the stages surrounding the Sherwood Forest, including The Black Crowes, MSTRKRFT, Umphrey's McGee, Les Claypool, Zappa Plays Zappa and a host of other impressive bands to get people's tired and dirty feet moving.

On top of the many great bands, the fabulously designed Sherwood Forest, the unmatched VIP experience and the many other facets that make ROTHBURY great, the best part of the festival – one they don't even control – is the extremely mild temperatures. They allow you to put on an extra layer at night to get cozy, not burn during the day, and most importantly, let you sleep in until whenever you want. I had already panned the schedule the night before for a list of bands I wanted to see, and nothing enticed me enough to get out of bed early. Armed with that bit of information, I opened my tents windows to guarantee a morning breeze, and slept until noon. After two days of consistently running around the grounds, it felt great to take a load off that particular morning. I woke up, took my time getting ready for the day, and finally shipped off towards the grounds at around 2:15 in the afternoon.

My first set of the day came from southern alt-rock Uncle Tupelo offshoot Son Volt. The Jay Farrar-led quintet were a good way to start off a day full of rootsy Americana and alt-rock. They filled their early set with rock-tinged country that sounds much more sobering in this type of setting than the clubs they're accustomed to performing in. I have always been in the Wilco corner of the Uncle Tupelo split, but Son Volt have always intrigued me enough to catch them live whenever they're around. I didn't stay for long due to a random rain shower (the only time it rained all weekend!), but what I heard successfully managed to captured the spirit of the day perfectly within the first few songs of their set.

With Karesa at my heels, we moved through the Sherwood Forest towards the Broken Spoke (media/artist area) for a much needed cocktail. After charging a few batteries, we set off towards The Odeum to photograph San Francisco signer-songwriter Jackie Greene, who had already started his set. His songs were simple, but well written, and he had no trouble maintaining his hippie-turned-hipster image throughout the set. With the Grateful Dead as an obvious inspiration, Phil Lesh joined the fold for a fun take on their "New Speedway Boogie," that had Greene sounding, at times, quite like Jerry. I rather enjoyed the short set, but had to ship off towards the Sherwood Court in favor of more music coverage.

One of the repeat bands from last year, Zappa Plays Zappa, were next to take the Sherwood Court. Starting a bit late due to sound issues (a trend that would continue into Les Claypool's set later), Dweezil Zappa, son of legendary avante garde crooner Frank Zappa, took the stage with a top-notch band of rock-and-rollers. Performing the music his father made famous, Dweezil had no problem filling the mighty large shoes Frank left behind. When they performed at ROTHBURY last year, they were supported by a few of Frank's original Zappateer's, including Napoleon Muphy Brock, but this group was so tight that you wouldn't even know the difference if you weren't a musical nerd like myself. "Peaches & Regalia" was a definite highlight, especially the intricate guitar work that Dweezil has now morphed into his own style. While it's all the work of Frank Zappa, their constant improvisation and added touches completely epitomize what a jamband should sound like. Another great set from Dweezil and the rest of his cast of characters.

My third time seeing The Black Crowes (second in a month) was probably the best of the bunch. The first time was during ACL in 2005, and they brought all of their popular radio-friendly songs to the performance with them. Their headlining gig at last month's Wakarusa featured a bunch of jammed out new material that just didn't do it for me. This show, however, was actually quite good. I didn't recognize many of the songs they were playing – or care for that matter – what I did recognize was the raw power that these guys emanated throughout their early-afternoon showcase at The Odeum. Chris Robinson served as a true frontman, while his brother Rich, and additional guitarist Luther Dickinson added their own individual pieces of flair throughout the entire set. They have a distinct sound, mostly due to C. Robinson's gritty vocals, that has stood the test of time, and remained relevant to today's music culture. After about an hour of head-bobbing, I took off to catch the day's next act.

Another repeat from last month's Wakarusa, odd-ball bassist Les Claypool was set to take the stage next door at the Sherwood Court. We arrived a bit late, but due to the aforementioned sound problems, they hadn't started just yet. Finally getting things started, Claypool ripped into "Rumble of the Diesel" to the delight of the many masked and costumed concert attendees. Claypool is a master on the four-string, but it's his ability to pick out appropriate musicians to fill out the overall sound. Mike Dillon has been maintaining the percussion section for some time, while newcomers to the oddity faire include drummer Paulo Baldi and cello player Sam Bass – each adding a unique dimension to Claypool's compositions. After a lively "David Makalaster"/"Southbound Pachyderm" sandwich, I made my way backstage to grab a beer and hang out until our escort down to The Odeum for the night's headliner.

What a headliner it was. A re-reunited version of The Dead took the stage a little after 8:00 pm, and started their set in front of the largest audiences of the weekend. They began with one of their most recognizable tunes, "Sugar Magnolia," before jumping into one of my favorite Dead songs, "Eyes of the World," that had me dancing and singing along in the photo pit. I'm not sure if getting down in the pit comes off as unprofessional, but fuck it – I'm a huge music fan.

I made my way back to the media tent to grab a couple beers for the show, and returned right in the middle of "Friend of the Devil." It was great to hear that song, but will never sound right without Jerry singing it. Next was a quiet, but inspired take on Van Morrison's "Into The Mystic" that was extremely unexpected, but completely welcome. It was quick, but stood out as one of the best pieces of music I'd heard all weekend. The regular trio of "Help on the Way" into "Slipknot" finished by "Franklin's Tower" closed the stellar opening set by The Dead, and also served as the soundtrack to my brief trip to camp for party favor consumption.

I missed the "One More Saturday Night" opener, but wasn't worried because the fire that greeted me upon re-arrival to The Odeum would have instantly made me forget about it. A seriously funky version of the festival-appropriate "Shakedown Street" got the entire 30K-strong audience to their feet, from the front to the back throughout the entire song. From that point on, they could have stopped and I'd have been a happy man, but they continued to bust out several gems throughout set two. "I Know You Rider" led into an incredible drums segment that found String Cheese Incident percussionist Jason Hann joining the fold, as well as Justin Perkins, Luke Quaranta and Teal Brown of Toubab Krewe. It was a thunderous "Drums," one which focused heavily on the African rhythms Toubab Krewe are accustomed to banging out. Mickey Hart ended the segment with a psychedelic take on "Space" before Warren Haynes, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Jeff Chimenti rejoined Hart and Bill Kreutzmann for a nasty rendition of "Viola Lee Blues," igniting a string of glowstick explosions throughout the crowd.

About half-way through "VLB," I headed to meet up with Karesa, downed a quick beer, and then came back towards The Odeum to wait for the fireworks. I knew that the late night festivities (that I wanted to see anyway) wouldn't start until after the fireworks, so I got a spot on the hill overlooking the entire crowd. After a brief organ donor rap that's been an integral part of Phil Lesh's performance for some time, The Dead returned to the stage and immediately jumped into an appropriate "U.S. Blues." As soon as they started playing, the fireworks started blasting, and the whole crowd stood and stared into the sky for a nice long Fourth of July celebration (technically it was on the 5th, since it was almost 1:00 am). It was a beautiful demonstration, equally as great as last year's right after Widespread Panic. After the fireworks finale, The Dead finished their set with a cover of Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" that had the now amped-up crowd chanting along. It was an incredibly good Dead set, with highlights too abundant to list again, and proved to be the quite worthy of the top headlining spot at ROTHBURY on the Fourth of July.

Starting their set while The Dead were just finishing up, Canadian DJ duo MSTRKRFT began things with a recording of Jimi Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner" while the fireworks were still popping off (didn't see it, just heard about it). I rushed over just in time for them to truly get things going, and what I walked into was an absolute dance party. The duo, consisting of Al-P and Jesse F. Keeler, stood side-by-side smoking cigarettes and smashing a bottle of Crown Royal, all while making some of the hottest dance music I've ever heard in my life. The crowd was loving every minute of the set, especially when they started to remix JUSTICE's "D.A.N.C.E." with a healthy dose of Daft Punk. Karesa and I were moving as if we hadn't been running from stage to stage for three straight days, and didn't stop until the end of their set, somewhere around 2:30 am.

There were several options for further activities, but being the last late-night portion of the festival, we headed towards the Sherwood Forest to hang out deep in the woods. We remarkably caught up with Karesa's good friend Angel, literally two seconds after commenting on how we hadn't seen her all day, and shipped off towards the Speak EZ stage, a place where we hadn't spent much time all weekend. We were in search of a drink, so with one of the festival's bartenders now in tow, we had a better chance of securing one. We headed to the bar, took a secret round of shots, then headed to the the stage after seeing many shots of sparks coming from it. We walked up to witness a lady strutting around stage in a metal suit shooting sparks off of it with a grinder. It was interesting, but finished almost as soon as we got there. From then on, they let a DJ (P-Time, I think he told me...) take over to spin into the late hours. His beats were quite nice, so we stayed and danced along between the trees for a good while. I finally shipped off in favor of a few of the other shows, leaving Karesa, Angel and a host of new bartender friends in the forest to finish off their night.

I headed down the long, lighted path on my way towards the Ranch Arena to catch the last few songs of Umphrey's McGee. I'm not sure why it took me over four years to see this band again – last time being at the inaugural Jam in the Dam in 2005 – but I'm glad I finally had the chance to catch another live show. They are such a solid band, that keeps growing every time I see them. They have a rather large cannon of material, including their own songs and a bunch of choice covers that they always seem to bust out during the most appropiate of times. I had the chance to see their full performance the next night, where they were serving as somewhat of a post-headliner, so I'll save the real review for that set. All I have to say is that my love for this band has greatly increased after ROTHBURY 2009.

I headed towards the gate after Umphrey's finished their encore. I briefly stopped at Tripolee for the remainder of EOTO, but unfortunately they were on their last song. It was good to see the duo again, as it's been a while (a month...), so after they finished up a set that supposedly had sit-ins from The Dead's Bill Kreutzmann and a few others, I took off in search of my pillow.

What a Saturday. What a Fourth of July. The Dead lived up to their headliner status, while the day featured so much good music that anyone like myself that suffers from musical ADD would have left quite happy. One more full day remained, which included sets from both legends (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson) and some of my musical favorites (Yonder Mountain String Band, Umphrey's McGee). After a month of festivals and Phish shows, my tank was running on empty, but I was certainly ready to finish this festival off in style.
