Robert Ellis & Derek Dunivan - "While You're Cheating On Me"
Advertised as Robert Ellis and The Boys, his 3:50pm show at Drake’s was actually just him and Derek Dunivan (of Pure Rubbish). The set was a tribute to the Louvin Brothers, and included “While You’re Cheating On Me,” “Satan Is Real” (which featured Dunivan on what I think was a mini electric harmonium [awesome!]), “When I Stop Dreaming,” and “The Great Atomic Power.” This is gospel sung by sinners. Songs about heartache, temptation, death, and the fear of eternal hellfire. It’s a link to the old, weird America.
You can see it in Ellis’ face, the piercing eyes, devilish beard, and a grin to match. He knows something that we don’t, something he found in the music of the Louvin Brothers, among others. It’s ineffable, so he just plays it for us hoping that we’ll eventually get it. Of course, most of the time, we don’t. That’s when frustration can set in. Ellis was a bit frustrated Saturday night at his Walter’s set.
He admonished the crowd for conversing during opening act, Dark Dark Dark’s set. He compared it to going to an art gallery and drawing on a painting with a crayon. He remained composed though, kept a smile on his face, and didn’t lose the crowd. Still, it had been a long day, people were tired, drunk, and stoned, so they could be forgiven for an attention deficit.

If there was any question that this was not a Whiskey Wednesday, all doubt was lifted when Ellis politely asked The Boys to “get the fuck off the stage.” The rest of the show was a conversation between audience and artist that, like the best seductions, wavered between indifference and obsession. Ellis would sometimes stare into the crowd, deciding what to play next, as if considering which objects near him would be easiest to throw while inflicting the most damage.
Ellis is undeniably a rare talent. He’s got the voice, guitar chops, and instinct of a star, all at 21. His technique is effortless, whether contorting his fingers through complex chord changes, or pushing his voice up to a sustained wail. But the emotion he conjures to hit each note is palpable, sometimes painful. Grief, jealousy, and wrath lie beneath dulcet fingerpicking and rollicking honky tonk.

They soared on a reprise of the Louvin Brothers’ “When I Stop Dreaming.” Then The Boys came back for a few uptempo tunes and got the sore-footed crowd to dance again.

Ellis announced there would be two more songs. The Boys played one that might be called “Don’t You Go Out Dancing,” then left the stage. Ellis didn’t wait before going into a dark and heavy diminished arpeggio. There was no introduction, no eye contact. He was playing for himself now. If we wanted to listen, all the better, but we’d never know the secret of this weird song. Just to make it weirder, Geoffrey Muller stuck around, trading his bass for a saw and bow. This curiosity drew eyes and digital cameras. Robert Ellis sang his final song, he smiled and thanked the crowd, then went back to being one of them.

If I may re-purpose one of the great hyperbolic utterances of rock criticism: I have seen alt-country future and its name is Robert Ellis. Such hyperbole is necessary if only to stand among the local press that this guy has been getting. I’ve seen Robert Ellis four times, all in the last month. The first was his triumphant return to Whiskey Wednesdays at Mango’s. A friend said, you should come to this. I went in blind. It’s been noted elsewhere just what it is that will blow you away about these shows. The Houston Press likened it to the Armadillo World Headquarters in the early ‘70s when Willie Nelson managed to get rednecks, hippies, bikers, and heads to stand in one room without killing each other. At Mango’s there were parents, grandparents, and a swath of young people that could be labeled (and negated) as hipsters, but let me try to illustrate it quickly: the best two-steppers had the most tattoos and piercings. A scant two weeks later, Whiskey Wednesdays was put on hiatus; although the promise of its rebirth at Fitzgerald’s in late September portends an autumn of delightfully nauseating Thursday mornings.
