During my "musical revolution", electronic music was out of the mix completely. I had already opened my mind to several new genres of music, but electronic was out of the question. Perhaps it was my exposure to rave culture and house music in my younger years, but the simple thought of of synthesized beats brought illusions of scrawny kids in over sized clothing with candy necklaces, pacifiers, glow sticks and about every synthetic drug you could possibly think of. That combination was enough to make me cringe, and the fact that I now know CPR now and am in know way wanting to go mouth to mouth with a fished out geeker, may have also been a turnoff. That was until the summer of 2008, when EOTO came on the scene, and I was coaxed into it by ex Cheese members. Following that delightful experience, I hit up Rothbury that summer. With it's slew of music, electronic was in high supply, so I was able to seed through what I like, and what I don't. I figured out that my kicker was the ability for the artists to actually play their own instruments. As exciting as a guy and a laptop or turntable are, I can only take so much.

After a suggestion from a friend, I was lead to a late night showing of Pnuma Trio. What I took in that night would lead me craving more from the Memphis, TN based group. There diversity of style had me at the word go, as I stayed partying with these guys at the Tripolli Domes for an extended amount of time, until the madness kicked in. I had looked forward to catching a full set of these guys, and Saturday, April 17th seemed like the perfect day, as they were headlining in my hometown of Lincoln, NE at Bourbon Theatre.
Showing up a little late due to some prior engagements, I was quickly greeted by the last several minutes of what I believed to be Somasphere. I have caught them a few times, but have yet to really be sucked in to one of their sets. I don't think they are not talented, it's just their style of music doesn't really cater to my needs. It sounds all to familiar, and almost like it belongs in a cartoon. But then again, I haven't seen a full set in a couple of years, so it's kind of an unfair judgement.
The Pnuma Trio came out after a brief intermission, and the train instantly left the station with no return in sight. The now energetic Saturday night crowd kept it movin and groovin for the entire hour and a half set. Although the entire set was quite marvelous, I found myself focused on stage left, home to Lane Shaw and his drumming skills. Pounding out the beats of the evening, Shaw seemed quite focused on his precisely laid out drumline, while still feeding to the crowd.
Pnuma is able to achieve highs and lows throughout their set, setting off the crowd quickly just to slow it down in the same manner. The constant hills and valleys in their set are one of the most enjoyable aspects for me. The evening consisted of many of these, keeping the now large crowd sweating it out for early into Sunday morning. The evening proved as a positive one for me musically, as I was finally able to catch a full set of Pnuma, solidifying them as one of the premier acts in electronic music, in my opinion.
Over the last few months, Bourbon Theatre has jumped into the lead for live venues in the Star City. Although this is something that is extremely overdue, it is always better late than never. I don't think there is a week that goes by that I don't spend an evening there. Pnuma proved to be a perfect for the venue, and seemed to impress the Lincoln crowd. And as always, big thanks to Rad Kadillac and Bourbon Theatre for another smooth evening!

That was an excellent show, with top notch pics to prove it. Could of used a couple more old school tunes, but great none the less. It was nice not to be destroyed by the bass anymore after the first band, sheesh... I have never experienced not having the ability to talk because the bass was so heavy.

The bass was the the beginning of several times throughout the course of the night where you got your guts rattled! It was hittin pretty hard though. And I don't know bout top notch pics, but they'll do. For some reason, I completely abandoned my 50mm lens, which would have worked perfect in the low light. Oh well!
