Outside Lands 2009: Saturday In Review

Saturday of the 2009 Outside Lands Festival started off a bit late due to some necessary tourism throughout the city of San Francisco. We made it to the festival just in time for Mastodon afternoon set, and stayed to check out performances from Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave., Bat For Lashes, TV On The Radio, Deerhunter, Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band and the evening's headliners Dave Matthews Band.

I've never been the biggest fan of metal, but I've always appreciated the musicianship and die-hard fanbase of the genre. I've seen my fair share of metal groups, but my opinion of the music itself generally never changes. I decided to spend my first half-hour or so with progressive rockers Mastodon, strictly based on friends recommendations alone. While their take on the genre was a bit more accessible, and at times floated towards more psychedelic sounds, I still wasn't that into it. They were quite good at what they did, and featured one hell of a drummer with a knack for the double kick drum, but I still decided to leave early in search of something with more of a feel-good vibe.

I found what I was looking for all the way across the grounds at the Presidio Stage, where New Orleans funksters Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave. were steadily jamming. It was one of the only bands I saw that weekend that could fall under the 'jamband' tag, and as always, they provided a fun and danceable soundtrack for the shift into early evening. I've seen Trombone Shorty on several occasions, and on top of their music, it's their unbridled energy that keeps bringing me back.

Our next stop was at the all-natural, solar-powered Panhandle Stage for indie up-starts, Bat For Lashes. Currently one of the most hyped groups in the world of the hipster, Bat For Lashes (aka Natasha Khan) made her way through a dance-influenced set backed by a duo of multi-instrumentalists and a drummer. Her Cat Power-meets-Bjork vocal style, matched with her stunningly beautiful looks, kept me at full attention throughout the set. The quartet reminded me a bit of Yeasayer...if they were brimming with estrogen. We inched closer and closer while people took off in search of a close spot for DMB, or an even closer spot for the next set we were about to see. Bat For Lashes finished off with their recent hit, "Daniel," that to me was the low point in the set which explains how good the rest of the set was. Each and every song hit with a certain ferocity besides that one &ndazh; Khan must be tired of singing it. Still, this was easily one of the best sets of the day.

After the end of Bat For Lashes set, we made our way to the Twin Peaks stage for my most anticipated set of the day. Brooklyn's TV On The Radio were set to take the stage, and did so upon our arrival. We made it as close as the crowd would let us, and soon started getting down to the set opener, "The Wrong Way." An early highlight was "Golden Age," that found Kyp Malone's falsetto matched by a three-person horn section that featured Antibalas' Stuart Bogie on tenor sax. Tunde Adebimpe strutted his stuff all around the main stage, especially during a funky version of "Red Dress" and an erratic "Dancing Choose." "Wolf Like Me" was a definite crowd favorite, even inspiring two lumberjack-resembling dudes to viciously make out with each other while belting out the lyrics in between tongue-lashings. "DLZ" and "Shout Me Out" both reached new territories, especially with the help of the aforementioned horn trio. The sets climax came with a stunning version of "Staring At The Sun" that stretched well past the ten minute mark. Once again TVotR proved to me that they are one of the best touring bands to hit stages these days. There's a reason they've played every major music festival this summer.

TV On The Radio

Our plan for the next hour was to catch a bit of Deerhunter before running across the park for the last few songs of Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band. We headed to the Panhandle Stage where Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox was rambling off some nonsense about not ever listening to Bright Eyes, or knowing that his name was actually Conor Oberst. He added that he might go over and introduce himself after the show, just to make sure there would be no beef between them for playing at the same time. Soon the rest of the band made it to the stage, and they ripped into a noisy number to start the set. The temperature in the park went from a nice 75 and sunny during the day down to a brisk 55 and windy at night, which definitely put a damper on our plans. Having no protection other than the t-shirt on my back, I headed to the Winehaven to see if I could warm myself with some vino. After securing a nice glass of locally grown syrah/grenache mix, I headed towards the Sutro Stage to check out Oberst. We never actually made it to the stage, but rather stayed in the wooded pathway that led to the stage. It was a bit warmer there, so we decided to take in the end of the performance without actually seeing it. It was a much happier set than I could've ever imagined from the emo-licious Oberst, with the performance leaning heavily on jangly pop-folk numbers rather than the tear-inducing music he's been accustomed to writing.

The Winehaven

With a need for warmth, we set off in search of the cheapest clothing we could find. Nothing was going for cheaper than $40, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. Sitting in the middle of the field was an abandoned long sleeve shirt, that – after debating for a while – I snatched up and immediately put on. Don't judge me, that shirt saved my life (not really, but it made it a bit more bearable...).

After the best ground score ever, we headed into the rapidly growing crowd to get a decent spot for Dave Matthews Band. I've seen DMB on numerous occasions throughout the years, with my most recent show taking place in Houston back in may. That performance was a really good one, so I had high hopes for another top-notch showing from the college-rock titans. The show started off with "Why I Am" which is one of the better tracks from their most recent LP, Big Whiskey & the Groogrux King. From the start of the set something was noticeably wrong with Matthews' vocal tone. It was much scratchier than usual, and was definitely affecting him, especially with his attempts at hitting the high notes. About three songs in, Matthews apologized for the frog in his throat, and then ran through a full band version of "Stay or Leave" from his solo effort, Some Devil. The definite focus was on their new material, including a total of eight songs from their most recent three albums, and only six classics. One odd moment came at the end of "Jimi Thing." Fergie and apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas jumped on stage and started shouting into the microphone. Fergie even threw the lyrics to Sublime's "Santeria" over the top of the outro, before Matthews and apl.de.ap finished the song sans instruments with a dance battle. The whole scenario was a bit cheesy if you ask me. At the beginning of the weekend I vowed to not see even a second of the Black Eyed Peas, just because of my dislike for Fergie, but DMB up and ruined that for me now didn't they.

Overall, I was a bit disappointed with the set, and if they hadn't closed with my favorite song, "Two Step," I would have been very bummed. Thankfully their encore somewhat made up for it. After being joined by sacred steel master Robert Randolph, some random strumming led into a bass solo centered around the beginning chords of Led Zeppelin's opus, "Stairway to Heaven." Eventually, they segued into their signature take on Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" which reached full circle when Matthews started belting the lyrics to "Stairway" after Tim Reynolds made easy work of the legendary guitar solo. Randolph remained on stage for a vocal duet with Matthews on Sly & The Family Stone's "Thank You (Fallettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)," that closed the set with a call and response egged on by both singers. While the majority of the show was not enough to warm us up, the "Two Step" closer, followed by both encore songs managed to do the trick.

The second day of the 2009 Outside Lands Festival was over, and like the day before, it did its part in successfully entertaining the masses. We had a full day left, one that was even more saturated with great bands than the two days prior. We headed out of the park in search of cheaper dining and a few Red Hook's to cap off our night.
