Fresh off an appearance at Atlanta showcase Take The Stage, Houston hip-hop dynamos Check Other returned to their hometown with lyrical guns ablaze. On Saturday, February 2, the quartet of MCs provided the head-nodding soundtrack for a rapt audience at The Mink/Backroom.
Check O hadn't played an H-town show since August 2006, and I'd been anxiously awaiting another gig ever since. They certainly didn't disappoint, offering up savory tracks from both their EP and their first full-length album. These guys - Sunny D Cypher, Mr. Mention, Tommy Bumps, and Sid Vicious - have a rich history together, and that's apparent in their onstage chemistry. Unconcerned with the ostentation that's crowding the hip-hop realm (and the music world in general, for that matter) these days, Check O focuses on the music, consistently delivering fresh beats (courtesy of Tommy Bumps and Sunny D) and witty, inspired lyrics. They've got something to say, and it isn't about grills, guns or syrup.
Their setlist included songs with topics ranging from the composition of girls' names ("First Letter" - which I must point out omits the name Jenna. Just saying.) to gossip ("Rumors") and lessons on avoiding bullshit ("Miss Me"). Each Check O crew member brought his own unique energy to the performance, and it was evident that they are truly a collective: no one tried to bogart the mic, and they obviously all have a deep respect for one other. And besides, how could you not love lines like "We're made for each other like picks and Afros"? Or out-of-left-field references to the likes of Cardinals ex-coach Dennis Green ("32 Trap") and Sin City ("Begin")? As they declare in "Something to Remember", the music "gets better with age like wine - rewind it later, get the same feeling you got when you heard it the first time."
All in all, Check Other's performance was well worth the wait. In the time since their last Houston gig, their style has further developed and they've grown more comfortable onstage.
