Growing up, I never thought bluegrass would be one of my favorite genres of music. It wasn't until I saw Yonder Mountain String Band in February of 2003 that I fell in love with bluegrass. I immediately obtained a mandolin and added it to my pile of instruments that I love to play, but don't know how. I started to collect as much of Bill Monroe, John Hartford, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, David Grisman and all the other pickers that I could find. Soon after I started to really get into the new
wave of bluegrass, especially the scene coming out of Colorado and the Midwest.
My live bluegrass repertoire has been lacking the past several months, so I was excited to see that The DeWayn Brothers were bringing their rambunctious brand of newgrass to the downstairs lounge of Fitzgerald's in Houston on the 11th of January.

We made it in time to catch the last few songs of the opener, Steven Reynolds Band, finding these local Houston musicians to expel a nice country/bluegrass mix that fit well as a precursor to what we had in store. The band consisted of country-boy Reynolds on acoustic guitar and vocals backed by a rockabilly stand-up bassist and a jam-rock electric guitarist. This unlikely combination seemed to work well together. I hope to hear more from this young band in the near future.

Not one of the five members in The DeWayn Brothers are actually siblings. The only family tie in the band is the marriage between banjoist Garrett Briggeman and lead vocalist Jamie Lee Briggeman. The DeWayn Brothers formed when guitarist Eric Nelson and bassist Peter Gaskamp starting playing with Garrett's band, Loco Machine, which also featured mandolin player Josh Finley. Armed with years of practice, and praise from local bluegrass legends Split Lip Rayfield, The DeWayn Brothers have started to make a name for themselves in the Midwest and beyond.

After stopping upstairs to see a local reggae act, we made it back downstairs just in time to get a prime picture/video taking spot for the DeWayn Brothers set which started around 11 pm. I was immediately impressed. Only one song had passed, but I could have left right then a happy man. I am glad that I didn't. Their set consisted of several original songs, their own takes on traditional bluegrass standards, and at least two Split Lip covers. The most raucous member was most definitely Josh Finley. Sporting a mo-hawk and a wide jaw he made sure to play his mandolin as fast as possible. Eric Nelson definitely shined as the front-man, singing a majority of the lyrics during the set. Vocalist Jamie Lee Briggeman added very nice layering to the male bluegrass vocal style of Nelson. They had a lot of fun together on stage which definitely radiated out to the crowd, as small as it was.

There were plans for a second set, but we bailed because of early commitments the next morning. I knew that it would not be the last time that I saw The DeWayn Brothers, and am glad that this was my first experience with them. I think that everybody should be going to more bluegrass shows. If you are new to the genre, this is the perfect group to get your toes wet with.
