New Monsoon @ Club Dub Dub

Eggs and I attended the New Monsoon show that took place at Warehouse Live on September 20, where we heard of an acoustic set three members of the band planned to play the next night. The non-publicized event took place at Club Dub Dub (formerly the Jellyphish Lounge), one of our absolute favorite venues in Houston. We've caught a few acoustic shows there that have blown us away, so we were excited to learn that we'd get to experience another performance in this unique setting so soon.

When we arrived, acoustic guitarist Bo Carper, electric guitarist Jeff Miller and keyboardist Phil Ferlino were already playing for an appreciative audience gathered on rugs inside the tiny venue and spilling onto the outdoor patio. The vibe at Club Dub Dub is always welcoming and peaceful, a large part of its allure for us. The trio's (bassist Marshall Harrell and drummer Sean Hutchinson did not participate in this performance) two-set show was gentler and less rockin' than their usual plugged-in sets and made for a relaxing evening. A definite highlight for me was "Alaska" - it's one of my favorites and was beautifully augmented by harmonies provided by two ladies sitting right next to us. Lovely.

In other news, ACL kicked ass despite the dust, crowds, and heat. We'll be posting recaps and videos over the next couple of days, so check back for those. Voodoo Music Experience in New Orleans at the end of October will be our next festival adventure, followed by Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin in November.

Houston seems to be largely back on its feet after Hurricane Ike; I wish the same could be said for Galveston. Though the power outages and lack of Internet access have caused us to fall behind in our BOT work, Eggs and I can definitely count ourselves among the lucky ones.
