Moby @ Warehouse Live

Warehouse Live played host to a bountiful group of old-school ravers who were all in attendance to catch a rare Houston appearance from famed DJ Moby. He brought with him a full live band to perform the many hits he's released over the past twenty years. I skipped a private performance from Common and The Roots to attend, and couldn't be happier with my decision.

I arrived to the opening chords of an instrumental being performed over the PA as the lights lowered in aticipation of his entrance. One by one, the back up band consisting of a violinist, bassist, drummer, keyboardist and back-up singer, took their alloted spots before Moby walked on the stage strapped with a shiny black Gibson SG. They played through an ambient number before jumping into the 1992 hit "Go," which was tearing up the charts during the last time Moby ever stepped foot in Houston. It served as the perfect starting point of a set that saw him performing and reworking songs from his entire catalog. An early "Natural Blues" put so many memories of high school into my mind, that I had to belly up to the bar just tell myself that I was an older established adult and not driving around after class in my little red Ford Escort smoking pot and listening to mix-tapes.

Another throwback to my youth came with a nasty rendition of "Bodyrock," which saw Moby shedding the guitar to release his primal urge on a beautifully crafted set of congas. Soon, everyone was jumping again with a string of house and trance numbers that were especially intriguing in a full live band format. I wasn't too sure as to how they were going to pull off several of his more synth-heavy numbers like the ever-so-popular 2000 hit "Porcelain," but each and every tune was as good (if not better) than any studio mix I've heard through the years. Moby performed with a certain electricity that I would've never expected from such a shy and docile character. He is very comfortable in front of a live audience, whether it be with guitar in hand or in control of a set of turntables.

A few slower songs were somewhat forced towards the end of the set, but it did show off the powerful pipes of both back-up singers. A truly unique moment came with a droning cover of Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side." It didn't come as too much of a surprise to hear the tune, though, as Moby performed it with Reed himself at a SXSW showcase earlier this spring. The room seemed to approve after the songs finish, prompting Moby and band to jump into a three-song run of fast-paced booty-shaking rave tracks to end the longer-than-expected set. After a brief break, Moby came back for an extended 5-song encore that built upon the already-stellar set of music just performed, and included unexpected gems such as a cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs." The two-plus hour performance had even the wallflowers moving their feet towards the end, sweating it out with the rest of the sold-out crowd.

The decision to attend this show over Common and The Roots was a last minute one, and I'm quite happy with the choice I made. I heard that performance was quite good, but unlike them I've never seen Moby before, and probably wont have many more chances too in the near future. It was definitely a good way to get my mind off the fact that I was missing all the ACL action in Austin that weekend, and a definite trip down memory lane with several of the tracks performed, especially early in the set.
