We – or, more accurately, I – have quite a bit of content catching-up to do, so please try to overlook the tardiness of my posts over the next couple of weeks. New job, weird hours, thanks for your patience. My schedule's been all out of whack, but in between 4am shifts (I know! That shit should be illegal) I've somehow managed to squeeze in some shows over the past few weeks. One of the most memorable was, without a doubt, Los Campesinos! and Titus Andronicus' appearance at Walter's On Washington on January 29.

Walter's was already teeming with fans as Eggs and I walked up to the venue and took our position in line. We'd been shut out of a couple of shows there recently because we simply didn't expect them to sell out (I mean, come on, it's Houston), so we were a bit nervous as we stood in the non-moving line. Turns out our timing was actually good for once – the cut-off point wound up being a mere five people behind us. But no matter: we successfully made it into the show and spilled into the rather crowded interior to stake out a spot.
New Jersey's Titus Andronicus soon took the stage and initiated support duties, warming up the stage for LC! with a short set of the distorted lo-fi punk sounds that have earned them praise since releasing their debut full-length, The Airing of Grievances, last year. They came out swinging, launching into a series of noisy, energetic pieces; frontman Patrick Stickles commenced screaming almost immediately, his lyrics beating up the air above the audience. All five band members were noticeably active on stage, making for visual fun anywhere you looked.
Though punk is clearly their strongest flavor, it's obvious that Titus Andronicus draws from many different genres for inspiration. At times they veered toward more traditional rock, only to switch it up and throw in surf vibes with the next song; at one point they even sounded rather like drunken pirates belting out sea shanties. But most of all, what the quintet delivered was ambitious, multi-layered guitar rock. Personal favorites from the set included "Roadrunner," a Modern Lovers cover that suited them perfectly, as well as the band's own songs "Titus Andronicus Forever" and "No Future Part Two: The Days After No Future."
You might assume that a band with a name like Los Campesinos! – with members who adopt the Campesinos! moniker as their own last name – would be energetic onstage, and you'd be right. The LC! troop is the personification of an exclamation point, and at Walter's they presented enough onstage musical feel-good that I left the show contemplating a pen name switch to "Cereal!" The jury's still out on that one.
LC! didn't seem to have left much of their instrument arsenal back in Wales; the tiny Walter's stage was crowded with all manner of guitars, glockenspiel, melodica, and keyboards, in addition to the already ample personnel. Not to be outdone by the opening act, LC! displayed just as much enthusiasm during their set; at one point, frontman Gareth lowered himself to the floor in a cheerleader-y splits position and stayed there for an appreciable amount of time, banging away at a drum. I wanted to suggest that he write a song entitled "Me! Flexible! Drumming!", but didn't feel that it was the right time to offer up song proposals. Perhaps they'll have a suggestions box next time.
At any rate, LC! delivered a thoroughly enjoyable set of indie pop gems, and the band was a pleasure to experience both aurally and visually. Standout songs included "Broken Heartbeats Sound Like Breakbeats" and "You! Me! Dancing!" from Hold On Now, Youngster, their debut full-length, as well as "Miserabilia" and from last year's We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed. Actually, who am I kidding? I honestly fancied everything I heard from them that night. If you like your indie spiced with a bit of twee and a generous helping of catchy riffs, you should definitely make it a point to check these guys out.
Earlier in the day, we also had the pleasure of catching a bit of the in-store performance that Los Campesinos! played at Cactus Music. I say "a bit" because en route we had a run-in with a Metro cop whose primary purpose seemed to be to waste our time. Don't they have bus stops to police or something? Anyway, he delayed us for long enough to cause us to miss all but the last song and a half of LC!'s performance, but at least we got to catch some of it.
