Voodoo left our bodies and our ears quite exhausted, so it was not until the Wednesday following the festival that we made it to another show. New Orleans funk masters Galactic came into town for the start of their "Brass Tracks" tour, which featured special guests Shamarr Allen and Corey Henry on trumpet and trombone, respectively. Also on the bill were Oakland-based hip-hop group Crown City Rockers, who held down the opening slot.

We made it to Warehouse's Studio just in time to meet a few of our ticket winners and share some conversation and beer before the opener began. Soon the five members of the Crown City Rockers took the stage to show off their skills for the early show-goers. Soon the energy level started to pick up as the instrumental break-beats were coming fierce and fast. MCs Headnodic and Raashan Ahmad added a fresh sound that never seemed to overpower the live instrumentation. It was a good short set that did the job of getting the crowd on their feet before the headliner took the stage.
This was the my third experience with Galactic since the release of their newest album, the hip-hop infused From The Corner To The Block, late last year. All three times I have been impressed by their ability to mash the gritty funk they have become known for with the lyrical style of so many different MCs. While it is always great to see Chali 2na, Boots Riley or Lateef the Truthspeaker step up with them, it was their old-school raw instrumentals that made me a fan. Even with the additional horn players, it seemed like a return to their original format might have been in store. They soon arrived on stage and proved my suspicions true.
Surrounded by glowing boxes and sheets featuring psychedelic screen savers, Galactic took the stage and immediately began doing what they do best: getting the funk out. Drummer Stanton Moore soon showed why he is currently one of the best skinsmen around today, while bassist Robert Mercurio was busy steadily dropping bombs on the audience. Ben Ellman, Galactic's frontman (they don't actually have a frontman, but he stands closest to the lip of the stage), took the crowd to a whole other level with his mind-blistering saxophonics, while the interplay between guitarist Jeff Raines and organist Richard Vogel sent the crowd into a frenzy. And that was only the first three songs.
It was not until the announced special guests took to the stage that the dance party really began. Shamarr Allen, New Orleans trumpet virtuoso, first made his presence known with a blasting horn solo. Soon after, trombonist Corey Henry appeared, rocking sixteenth notes out of his weapon of choice. That is surely not an easy thing to do. After great first impressions were made by both horn players, the band soon locked into a groove while Allen, Henry and Ellman found themselves in a battle of the brass. Reworked versions of "Bongo Joe," "Doublewide" and "Baker's Dozen" highlighted the set, while newer, unheard-by-BOT songs were spotted throughout. The true climax of the set came when Crown City Rockers MC Headnodic returned to the stage to share vocal duties with Henry on the title track of From The Corner To The Block. While the MCs did not sound a whole lot like Juvenile, who provided verses on the original version of the song, their rendition sure seemed to win over a host of new fans in the audience. Soon Henry found himself walking through the crowd blasting the same sixteenth notes he fired off at the beginning of the set. It was a delectable way to finish off an already nasty set of jazz and hip-hop driven funk.
Galactic soon returned for an encore, but we were spent and ready to head home. They probably could have played all night if the Warehouse Live staff would have let them. While this performance wasn't as stellar as some of the times I've seen them before, it was still a spot-on showing from one of the most tight-knit groups of musicians I have ever seen perform live.
For a guest-laden set of grimy funk, I give Galactic 8.1/10 yolks.
