EOTO @ Club Dub Dub

Houston once again played host to improvisational dance duo EOTO at the backwoods, semi-private Club DubDub. We brought some friends along to enjoy the cool early evening air at the lounge while absorbing new sounds from one of our most blogged about bands.

We hadn't seen EOTO since our run of summer festivals months ago, so when they announced they were coming back to Club DubDub, we were ecstatic. Finally, the appointed night arrived, and we found ourselves traversing that familiar curve through the timber-lined neighborhood in the heights, past the unexpected house that holds this backyard venue. The rules are simple: no smoking cigarettes inside the lounge, inside voices outside, and be kind to your neighbor. Dancing among 65-year-old men and 7-year-old children to completely improvised electronic funk music certainly sounds like a perfect night to me.

I couldn't think of a better place in the world to see a band than Club DubDub. It is the perfect backdrop for whatever type of band that could be thrown into its music-soaked walls, whether it be the dance styles of EOTO, the jam rock of Houston's own Moses Guest, feel-good bluegrass from Hot Buttered Rum, or an electrifying acoustic set from one of the many incarnations of New Monsoon. Each time we bring someone new to the lounge, they leave with a good memory and a longing to return. The venue's loose BYOB policy is always a plus, but it's the amazing people who inhabit this undiscovered bohemian mecca that truly make it what it is. We will continue to return to the lounge as long as it continues to exist, regardless of name or ownership changes. If you want to get away from Houston for a while without actually leaving the city, than this might be the place for you.

The music is constantly progressing each time we see the duo consisting of Michael Travis and Jason Hann, better known for their percussive work in String Cheese Incident. Constantly putting together unadulterated performances, Hann is perfectly syncopated with the melodic tweaks coming from Travis' ensemble of instruments and electronics. On top of their amazing chemistry together, they both know how to stay in touch with the audiences mood throughout the show. They continue to build their loops until the audience is in a frenzy, finally dropping the beat at the musical apex. They know how to throw a party, and keep their listeners incredibly entertained throughout the course of the show. They bring the same energy to every performance, whether they are playing to 1000 people at a festival, or 100 at a small dank club, and never fail to make their audiences leave craving more. While I have great hopes for the return of String Cheese Incident, EOTO's performances are more than enough to satisfy me in the meantime.

Are you going to miss EOTO next time they come to Club Dub Dub?

I didn't think so.

Eggs' Rating: 9.7/10 yolks. It started at a 9.2 just for being at Club DubDub, so EOTO didn't need to even do much for it to be an almost perfect evening.

Check out another video from the performance on our YouTube channel.
