Dave Matthews Band made an early trip to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and brought along The Avett Brothers to support. The khaki shorts, flip-flops and over-bronzed co-eds were in abundance for their yearly summit of stoned swaying and drunken sing-a-longs.

While my time spent listening to Dave Matthews Band has dwindled over the years – I now only occasionally put on Under The Table and Dreaming or Live at Red Rocks to rekindle my love – I will always hold a special place for them in my heart. They were one of, if not the, greatest influences in my music listening habits throughout the past ten years. They were also the band that forced my musical obsession – particularly in the live format – by helping introduce me to so many new bands. The constant energy and devotion that DMB dedicates to each and every live performance is unparalleled by any band touring today. Even after losing a founding member, they have continued to stress the importance of their die-hard fanbase as they tour on with a new line-up. You might not be a fan of Dave Matthews Band, but their undeniable presence in today's live music industry deserves huge amounts of respect.

This being my first time photographing at the Pavilion, added to the fact that it was one of my all-time favorite bands, I found my nerves to be running just a wee bit higher than usual heading into the night. Usually when I'm going to a local club to shoot a show, nervousness isn't a factor, but for some reason it was overtaking my emotions on the long walk up to the venue. After receiving my credentials, I quietly waited around hoping to catch The Avett Brothers open up the evening and wondering if I'd get to photograph them. It was a pretty cool spot to wait in, though, as I witnessed both Avett Brothers shooting the breeze mere feet from me, DMB violinist Boyd Tinsley walking into three different trailers before eventually finding what he was searching for, and Matthews shadow-boxing with now-permanent saxophonist Jeff Coffin.

After getting the schedule sorted, and realizing we'd have the chance to shoot The Avett's, the ten-or-so photographers were guided into the pit. They'd already begun their set with "St. Joseph's" from the 2008 EP The Second Gleam, so we caught the tail end as we started taking pictures. "Paranoia in B-flat Major" came next, bringing a nice majority of the mostly-seated pavilion to their feet. The Avett Brothers are still not ready for such a large stage, but they had no trouble filling the pavilion with their unique blend of bluegrass, folk and indie-rock. After the first three songs, I dropped off my gear, got a beer and headed back to the pavilion to catch the rest of the Avetts' set.

They played through 12 songs that spanned their surprisingly deep catalogue. A few more tracks from their breakout album Emotionalism were played, including "Weight of Lies" and "Shame," but the highlight of the set had to be their performances of two new songs from their forthcoming Rick Rubin-produced LP. They ended their opening set with a rowdy version of "Four Thieves Gone" that had each band member, including the two that aren't Avetts by birth, showing off their skillful instrumentation while picking lengthy solos. Though short, The Avett Brothers' set still made a lasting impression on the already-seated early arrivers, and the kids scrambling to find blanket space for the night's headliner.

As soon as the dusky sky turned dark, the crowd's cheering took over the pavilion, ensuring that Dave Matthews Band would get a proper welcome upon arrival to the stage. With a sly grin on his face, Matthews made it out first, taking the time to assess the audience at hand. A dimly lit black, red and white background cast a silhouette on the band, while Matthews hummed out a few bars into the microphone. With the sudden intro to "Don't Drink The Water," a common opener in DMB's repertoire, came an onslaught of bright white light, projecting the band for the entire audience to see. FInishing the first tune with a brief interpolation of Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land," they smoothly transitioned into "Stay or Leave" off of Some Devil, Matthews' solo album.

Soon DMB were off into their new material. "Funny The Way It Is" was followed by "Spaceman" which led into "Cornbread," a track they've been road-testing for the past few years. Busted Stuff's "Raven" was a nice surprise in the middle of the run of new songs that also included "Why I Am," a track written in dedication to Leroi Moore, DMB's original saxophonist who passed away last year after complications from an ATV accident. "Jimi Thing" served as a showcase for regular collaborator – and all-around badass – Tim Reynolds, whose guitar skills have added such a completing dimension to DMB's overall sound. The midset point of the night came with their final new song, "Beach Ball." While I found it to be their best new song of the night, the crowd seemed to feel otherwise, as they used the time to empty their wallets at the concession stands.

I was surprised when they busted out a mid-set "Two Step," the definite highlight of the show. It found me acting like a high schooler again, hollering out the lyrics as I danced along. The most stirring point of the night came when Matthews covered Tex Ritter's 1945 classic "Rye Whiskey," which was introduced as "an old song." Fitting right in with Matthews' usual music subject, "Whiskey," which featured haunting lyrics and minimal backing music, could have easily been mistaken for an early DMB b-side. Soon they were off into an appropriate version of "Pig," which brought out their lighthearted side in the middle of the swine flu scare. "41" had the best reception of the night and led into a raunchy version of "Anyone Seen The Bridge," highlighted by a quick tease of "Also Sprach Zarathustra," also known to us Phish-heads as "2001." What was listed on set list as "Too Much" (Fake) was just like it said, they played the first two few notes of the song, and faked us out by jumping into recent fan favorite "Grey Street" instead to close out the set. I'm not a big fan of the song, so using it as the set closer kinda bummed me out, but the encore did a good job to save the show.

After about seven or eight minutes of pre-teen girls screaming for more, Matthews came back to the stage and started strumming out the chords to "Everyday." After a nice crowd singalong that added the lyrics "Hani, Hani...come and dance with me" from the DMB original "#36," they finished the night out with Before These Crowded Street's one-two punch of "Pantala Naga Pampa" and "Rapunzel" that had me singing along while finding the quickest way towards the exit to guarantee an uncrowded walk back to my car.

I had a fun night that didn't fail to bring me all the way back to the beginning of my musical obsession. While I have new experiences every time I attend a performance by DMB, it's the familiarness that keeps me coming back year after year. Whenever I have the chance to be reminded of a simpler time, where all I had to worry about was where the next party was, I'll be damned if I don't take it. So even if I don't have the latest version of the newest song by Dave Matthews Band on regular rotation on my iTunes, I still will never pass up the opportunity to catch them anytime they come around.
