Voodoo Experience 2009: Sunday In Preview

Voodoo Experience 2008: Friday

Popping my New Orleans and Voodoo cherry in 2007, there was absolutely no question as to whether I would be back again. It's hard to believe that this will be my 3rd year in the Big Easy for one of the most diverse and fun musical experiences out there. What's not to like about a nasty ass festival over Halloween weekend in New Orleans? Absolutely nothing! And this years lineup impresses more then ever with Sunday being no different, guaranteeing to start your sabbath off right. It'll be more than splendiferous to meet up with my fellow BOT heads, and all of you freaks, in one of the most musically inclined cities on the planet. On that note, I sure as shit hope that I can book it down to Kansas City in time for my flight. But all will be well, because after all, it's N.O. Whose got my Monday night Saints tickets?

The Pogues ::: 2:15pm ::: Playstation/Billboard.com Stage

What better way to start out your Sunday morning then with some Irish music! As hard as may be to wake up after a rough night, we'll surely be there. The Pogues have been around forever spreading their fast paced punky drunken Irish folk sound. Are those even adjectives? Besides, I'm not familar with The Pogues, but luckily our friend Hash Browns sure is.

Shooter Jennings ::: 2:30pm ::: Soco/WWOZ Stage

Shooter Jennings is the son of the late Waylon Jennings, but puts out a sound much different, while remaining in the same genre. Shooter's sound leans more towards the red dirt country area, showing much of his rock influence in his music. I know; being the son of a legend shouldn't make you famous. But Shooter has gone out and made a name for himself. Must be in the genes.

Widespread Panic ::: 3:15 ::: Voodoo Stage

I've seen Panic a ton of times, and I still keep coming back for more. With a midday Sunday set, it will definitely be a different look. There rockin sound with a southern twist will be soon to melt a few new faces at Voodoo this year. Look for us up front on Schools side, as per usual.

JJ Grey and Mofro ::: 4:00pm ::: Soco/WWOZ Stage

Keeping on with the southern theme, JJ Grey and Mofro take the stage in the early evening. Hailing from Jacksonville, FL, their sets are filled with mixtures of fast paced rock and blues, along with slow paced ballads. Mofro has made appearances at several festivals, and are surely worth a listen.

Squirrel Nut Zippers ::: 4:15 ::: Bingo!Parlor

I didn't know that the Squirrel Nut Zippers even existed still. But after a recent revival, they have been hittin the road again, and should be a high energy show. Look for everyone getting down to a little gypsy stylee mixed with swing under the tent.

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Ave. ::: 5:30pm ::: Soco/WWOZ Stage

Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews is nothing short of a prodigy. The New Orleans raised gentleman will put on a dancing good time where ever he is. We have happened to catch him on more than one occasion, and a dance party always grows from his location. Check him and Orleans Ave. out to boogy Nawlins style.

The Flaming Lips ::: 5:45pm ::: Playstation/Billboard.com Stage

You should be certain that while you're at Voodoo, you will see an awesome stage show or two. The Lips put on more than just a stage extravaganza! It's more like a broadway play. Eccentric lead singer Wayne Coyne will make sure that you are more stoked than you've ever even considered. Throw in some aliens, santas, confetti and hamster balls, and you've got yourself some entertainment. Here's another Letterman clip. I'll save the rest for your eyes.

Rebirth Brass Band ::: 6:30pm ::: Preservation Hall

We all know one thing. There aint no party like a Rebirth party, cause a Rebirth party don't stop! Rebirth was the last band playing at last years Voodoo. This New Orleans based brass band has been rockin New Oreleans for years, and Voodoo wouldn't feel the same without them.

Lenny Kravitz ::: 7:00pm ::: Voodoo Stage

I never thought that I would be seeing Lenny Kravitz in my life. But in less than a week, that is exactly what I will be doing. A legend in his own right, Kravitz will be taking the stage along side two other good acts, which should cause a little bit of moving around the festival grounds to close out the weekend.

The Meat Puppets ::: 7:15pm :: Bingo!Parlor

One of the original alternative bands, the Meat Puppets set the stage for more music than hate your life to. Everyone knows that they are one of Kurt Cobain's main influences, but the Meat Puppets have over 10 albums and have been around a quarter of a century. Another excellent choice to close out the weekend.

Robert Randolph and The Family Band ::: 7:30 ::: Soco/WWOZ Stage

Starting out playing his steel guitar in church, Robert Randolph is one of a kind. Unfortunately, his show is not one of a kind. If you've had the chance to catch him and his Family Band, it's pretty much going to be the same show. If you haven't, I would highly recommend them for a high velocity set, featuring Randolph's signature lap steel skills. If you're looking for a dance party to end your Voodoo weekend, head to the Soco/WWOZ Stage for this mixture of rock, blues, soul, gospel and everything else under the sun.

-Cocked in Nebraska, soon to be mega cocked in New Orleans! See yall soon!!!
