California-based lyrical mastermind Busdriver brought his impressive solo act to Houston's Walter's On Washington on a slow Sunday night. In tow was another Cali resident – LA's Abstract Rude opened up the evening with a set of smart rhymes.

I walked in to Walter's right at the beginning of Abstract Rude's set, pleasantly surprised with what I was hearing. I'd only ever heard Rude flow once before, when he lent his vocal talents to a cover of Sublime's "Waiting For My Ruca" which appeared on the tribute album Look At All The Love That We Found. I was impressed there, so I figured I'd like his set a bit before even entering Houston's best dive. On top of his lyrical skill, the guy can also sing, which took away any need for a backup singer. He reminded me a bunch of Pharoahe Monch, but much less polished. The meager crowd seemed to be enjoying him as well, especially one drunk patron that was belting out all the words to his songs right back at him. At one point Rude took a moment out of his set for a requested freestyle, which might have been the most impressive part of his set. He rapped about love and life, and even threw out a few shout-outs to Houston celebrities and landmarks. While he was only performing in front of about forty of Houston's die-hard music fans, I'm sure his performance would be quite elevated by a home-town crowd of a thousand. The energy was lacking, but that was only because the crowd was too small to feed much of any of it back to him. Regardless, it was still a perfect way to introduce the night to the smart, clean hip-hop that was being showcased that evening.

Busdriver was next to take the tiny stage. I've seen the MC once before when he performed on the Tripolee stage at the inaugural ROTHBURY festival last year. He left both Cereal and I incredibly impressed, enough so to dive into his catalog upon return home. He's a quirky MC, bringing rhymes quicker than you can even consume what he's saying. By the time he's already moved on to a new subject in his song, you find yourself with jaw exposed, amazed at the speed and quickness of his delivery while still trying to piece together his words from the last verse. He's unlike any other rapper going today, and is slowly building upon his repertoire and his effulgent abilities live on stage. He performs his songs like "Imaginary Places" and "Casting Agents And Cowgirls" with ease, and brings an impressive lot of freestyle to each hit. Just like Abstract Rude before him, the true brightest moments arrived with said freestyles, where he proved that his mind moves just a wee bit quicker than most of ours.

Leaving us pining for more, Busdriver exited stage right only after about a fifty minute set. No one in the building left disappointed, though, as the energy that wasn't too apparent earlier in the evening was now abuzz through the tiny venue. Despite the small-ish Sunday night crowd, each MC brought the best of their abilities to Walter's, hopefully leaving with some sort of love for Houston and their fans.

We finished our Lone Star's and headed out the door to greener, non-Washington Avenue pastures. It was probably the last time I'll ever step foot in Walter's On Washington, as they are set to move shop after Halloween weekend to a new place in the area surrounding Diverse Works and Last Concert Cafe in north Downtown Houston. While I'm glad that they are getting away from the newly douche-ified Washington Avenue, I'm somewhat bittersweet as Walter's has featured some of the best live shows I've seen in Houston. If they can keep a similar vibe going with the new place, well cheers to them, but it's never going to be truly the same. Thanks for the memories Walter's on Washington, you will surely be missed by many!
