Hip-hop has always been one of my true loves. The problem is, most "commoners" can't audibly separate hip-hop from rap, thus shoveling us fans into one category. In all actuality, they are two very opposite ends of the spectrum. While most mainstream rap artists rhyme about how many cars, women, houses, money etc. they have, hip-hop artists speak truth about real life problems, triumphs, tragedies and other things that you and I can easily relate to.

On that note, Atmosphere made a pit stop at Slowdown in Omaha, NE on their Paint The Nation tour, with label-mates Abstract Rude and Blueprint in tow. Atmosphere was one of the first groups that had me turned on to this genre. I got my first chance to see them live at Rothbury this summer, but unfortunately photography obligations prematurely ended my time with their set, which also included Brother Ali. So needless to say, when I found out they would be performing so close to my residence, I was ecstatic. The serene venue was sure to turn into absolute pandemonium, but the sell-out crowd needed to be warmed up first, and both openers were more than adequate to fill that request.
Up first for the night was Abstract Rude, hailing from Los Angeles, CA. The crowd was quite dismal during the beginning of his set, but you could see more people slowly filtering in, moving closer to catch a glimpse. The beats were laid down by DJ Rare Groove, who also kept us entertained before the show started with some classic hip-hop tracks. Both DJ and MC seemed to connect very well, giving Abstract Rude ample opportunity to lay down his fast-paced rhymes. Much of the set was spent trying to get the crowd to light up in spite of the Nazi eagle eye staff lurking in the shadows. The set was topped off with the Sublime cover "Waiting For My Ruca," which Abstract Rude contributed to on the tribute album "Look at All the Love We Found." By the end of his brief set, the fans consumed much of the free space on the floor, possibly lured in by the sick show going on or perhaps in anticipation of Blueprint.
I had heard a lot of good things about following artist, Columbus,OH-based Blueprint. The funny thing is that as he took the stage, I realized he was the gent who was standing next to me throughout most of Abstract Rude's set. Blueprint instantly won the crowd over, leading what seemed like house-wide karaoke with several of his tracks. Although this set was also quite brief, I think Blueprint gained many new fans that night. One aspect of his set that especially stood out was his comical song "Big Girls Need Love Too." His sharp and witty raps, also backed by DJ Rare Groove, were the perfect opener and a fitting way to get the crowd in the mood for Atmosphere's set. I wasn't familiar with his material previously, but was inspired enough to instantly run over to the merch table and pick up one of his albums. Luckily, Blueprint was standing right there with Ant. During a brief conversation with him, he recommended his album 1998. Making a long story short, I would undeniably recommend Blueprint.
The dance floor filled instantly as we all awaited the arrival of the night's headliner, Minneapolis, MN-based Atmosphere. I had been extremely excited to finally be able to reunite with them since my hasty departure from their Rothbury set. The break ended abruptly with producer/DJ Ant taking the stage with their backing band, including Erick Anderson on keys, Mankwe Ndosi on vocals and Nate Collis on guitar. Slug soon joined the onstage antics by quickly moving into a couple tracks off of Atmosphere's most recent effort When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold, including "Music Box" and "Puppets." I was overjoyed to see that we would be experiencing Atmosphere with a backing band as opposed to my first experience with them. The friendly scene was perfect for Slug to get up close and personal with the audience, allowing for a plethora of delight and audience participation.
The highlight of my night was undoubtedly the instant the beat to the title track from their 2002 release God Loves Ugly came over the PA. This was the track that had just begun as I departed from their Rothbury set, so I was quite happy that I had another opportunity to hear it live. This then led into another track from the same album called "Lovelife," also a personal favorite. The night took us on a persistent trip through the group's catalog, and continued until almost closing time at about 12:30pm. One of the biggest surprises of the night was the sheer vocal prowess of back-up singer Ndosi. Her talent was evident early, but wasn’t really showcased until late into the set. To sum it up, this girl can wail! They finished up with a quick two-song encore that contained an up close and personal version of "Guarantees," also off of their latest disc, and were joined by Abstract Rude and Blueprint onstage. The crowd quickly dispersed, as did we, with our drunk ass, screaming, belligerent friend David just behind us. For one night, the often indie style club was successfully transformed into a mecca of hip-hop, bringing nothing but positive results for fans, faculty and performers.
Overall, the Paint the Nation tour was very impressive. The sold-out Friday night crowd showed up ready for a good time, and all of the artists seemed to be prepared for the same thing. I would highly recommend catching this show if they make it to your area. I certainly hope to catch all of these acts in the near future.
For an excellent warm-up act, more than worthy of bringing all the freaks inside for the night, I give Abstract Rude 6/10 slices.
For an incredibly impressive straight up hip-hop act, filled with hard hitting vocals and an amazing amount of crowd energy, I give Blueprint 8/10 slices.
For a perfect ending to the trio and a show that contained everything I could have ever imagined out of this act, and more, I give Atmosphere 8.75/10 slices.
